Played By= Anna Torv
Category= JSS Linguist and Comm-officer
Name = Ia Q Ash (maiden name: Belmont)
Alias/Nicknames = Q, Belmont's Ninth, Wordy, Ash
Age = 34
Status = Married to (but separated from) Lord Henri Ash
Height = 5'4" and 1/2, usually says 5'6"
Build = Athletic
Eye Color = Green
Hair Color = Blonde
General Demeanor/Personality = Introverted, determined, quiet,adventurous, intelligent, honest, earnest, curious, opportunistic voyeur, geek for The Cities (and tech) of Old, Linguistic Genius, slightly paranoid, stuffed-panda collecting, optimist.
Quirks = a little bit of a neat freak (well dressed, might straighten folks clothing, desks, or general space if within touching distance longer than two minutes); can't cook (seriously, keep her out of the galley, she might actually blow something up...); sometimes moves her mouth without saying anything, it's mostly a mimic of the way other people say things but it can weird folks out...
Best Skills = Linguistics, singling out and IDing sounds and patterns (even on broken transmissions), coding and decoding, com-tech (inside, out, and even designing new tech), speed reading, math, evasion, free-hand climbing, and running (very fast, over obstacles, and for long distances because she had to outrun eight older brothers)
General Skills = playing musical instruments both old and new, sewing, drawing, archaeology, anthropology, psychology, rapid situational assessment, Tenri (tennis meets billiards -where players must strike the ball through hoops/holes behind the other player to score additional points), swimming, repairing farm equipment, some hacking (outside of com-tech), calligraphy, basic firearms, basic hand to hand combat, and general endurance.
Reputation =
Q: there's speculation it stands for "Question" and the suggestion that she's not legitimately Belmont's daughter.
Belmont's Ninth child and only daughter, she has a reputation for being highly off-limits and overly protected, especially since four of her five surviving brothers are also JSS.
JSS elders who were around when she was a kid, know her as the girl who cracked the KOO (Karklun Outer Orbit) transmission: an incident in which she was actually running and hiding from her brothers while visiting their father on a Karklun Outer Orbiting JSS station when she overheard two Com Officers arguing over what they heard. As the story goes, she dropped from the ceiling like some kind of animal and flipped a couple switches on their control board, backed up their recording and replayed it with an adult-worthy reprimand to their inability to do their jobs; she was seven years old.
JSS kids (kids who grew up station-hopping because of parents working for JSS) know her as the lab-rat; some say she was experimented on, other's say they were just tests for her aptitude but one way or another, she spent a lot of time in labs as the subject of study even as an adult. (open to ideas as to why! -beyond her Linguistic/pattern genius I mean...)
They call her Wordy in tease that she knows every word in every language (she doesn't, but people talk and encyclopedia is too much too say)
Some in the science community have shunned and discredited Ia Q Ash (formerly Belmont) for her "wild" claims that the Hailos Ruins are somehow of Earth (or Earth-human) origin (based on the writing and art), saying she is projecting her passion for the Cities of Old and should stick to building comm-tech for JSS.
Well known for being 'given' to Lord Henri Ash, the son of a Harvest Lord who presides over Altu'ki, in exchange for the JSS Security Officer Belmont's ability to keep his land despite having only one son left (dirtside) to work it. (
Brief Bio= ((flattering Remmy and taking after her interviewed history...only this is one of her brothers talking...))
"Let me stop you right there. That stack of papers you have is some desk-jockey's piss poor attempt to quantify the experiences of Q's life. It's a long, boring, and not entirely accurate read so I'll spare you. What you need to know is simple. She was born in Altu'ki, a small farming town on Javos no one's ever heard of, for good reason. The 'I' is for Indigo, the ninth letter of the alphabet, and the 'a' for the first; as she's Belmont's ninth kid and first girl, Ia. Don't ask me where the 'Q' comes from cause Belmont wont even tell us. The point is, Ma wasn't around to see her take her first breath, let alone to name her or raise her on account of dying bringing her into the world so yeah, Q's a little rough around the edges. We, her brothers, didn't know nothing about raise'n no girl anymore than Pa did and he wasn't around-
"Blaz-A-blah, I know... and I also know that file there includes the 'Karklun outer orbit incident report.' So, don't sit there like I got to convince you she's good for it. Ia's been training for this mission since before she could see over the counter! Show me someone who has more field experience. Show me someone who's as well known to the outer station crews. Show me someone who has a bigger passion for languages and communication. She sucks at the personal stuff, yeah, but you guys have been using her to answer your comm questions since before she realized boys didn't have jeebies (cooties). Hailfire (like saying 'hell' and referring to the deadly-burning heat of Hailos surface) Sir, she helped design the damn equipment your outfitting in that shiny new bird the bit-bags (like 'money bags')-I mean Lords, commissioned for this expedition!
"Sorry, Sir; you're right, I don't mean any disrespect. All I'm sayin' is, Q's the one you're going to hire. She's the biggest comm-nerd you got, so let her geek out where you don't have to take the insubordination complaints to the shredder every fortnight. Yeah I'm sayin' make her the Boss! Why? because she wont even notice when they whisper behind her back if she walks off without dismissing anyone. Sides, she's cute right? I know she's married and all but they haven't even seen each other in two years; don't you think hers is a face worthy of greeting any manner of native or alien folk out there? Nevermind she's the one most likely to decipher alien symbols- not that I'm saying there ARE aliens out there, but you know... we've all heard the rumors you guys are keeping things hush-hush. Bottom-line, you made her enlist on account of her knowing too many JSS secrets, why not put her out there where she can use them to the expeditions benefit?
"No, no; I'll see myself out, thank you Sir."
