The Underside is where you will find the hardest killers, most cut-throat merchants, freelancers and brawlers. It was there that Niema was born and if you believe the rumors it was a bloody affair that only the bastard newborn survived. No one seems to know for sure where and how she got her start the first few years of her childhood but most speculate it was no more civilized than the rest of her youth. The first stories anyone will ever hear about the renowned BlackDeath Pyke put her around the age of nine. Half-pint Pyke back then, or so the stories say, she was a fourft-something little terror breaking knee caps and cutting ham-strings. She was raw, barbaric and wild like a little banshee no one knew what to do with; commanded by one of the most ruthless Under-Merchants.
Her wild destructive abilities weren't the only thing of note about the dark-eyed little tyrant. She had a fresh and very angry looking scar across her mouth and down her chin. It didn't take long for word to reach the Underboss and the Count of the Underside of Midway and when it did the Under-Merchant was commanded to bring her before them. Her talents were tested in the wager-pits where the Count of the Underside of Midway decided he wanted her to work for him. So he killed the Under-Merchant for turning a child into an animal and then began having her more formally trained and conditioned. The one advantage the Count was grateful the Under-Merchant had 'programed' into the little Niema, was a hyper-sensitivity to the snap of fingers which acted like an off-switch.
As she matured she took on the name Niema, or Nie to those she considered family (The Count and Underboss for example). She also became increasingly independent and built up a will that if enflared, could fight the engrained reflex to submit at the snap of a finger. It wasn't something the Count liked to see because she only got increasingly lethal with age. An acrobatic fighter who prefers to be up-close and in your face. The nowOld-Timers of the Underside watched her develop her craft like any artist. Against a group of men it wasn't uncommon to see her latched onto two of them in one way or another-- breaking necks between her thighs and arms with a full body twist of effort. Like a snake uses all of it's muscles to coil, yet can moved different sections, Niema uses every part of her body when she fights and she doesn't relent without force.
Because of her increasing reputation and popularity as the seductively dangerous exotic teen already marred with her share of scars, she began to gain more sway than the Underboss of the time. This couldn't be allowed of course, and so the Underboss petitioned to have her sent out on one of their transport ships to expand her experience and all that. Next thing she knew she was the unhappy ward of the Captain to a ship by the name of Bavishna, which she was told meant "little beast." Her anger for being sent away made her more rebellious and without the Captain being told about the little trick to tame her she grew brazen. She inserted herself in their business and with her success in what she said or did, they continued to allow her and then even encourage her to take point on a matter.
Transporting on the Underside if dirty business, it's the stuff no one else will do or touch and that environment cultivated the already dark youth. Most of those whom did business with the Bavishna who tried to push their luck, thought it was a joke when they said the marred-mouth bastard was a killing machine; until they saw her in action, not always living long enough to tell anyone about it. It wasn't just killing Nie was good at though, her intelligence surpassed most of the crew particularly in the areas of human behavior, group dynamics, deception, manipulation and improvisation; a ten steps ahead kind of woman. They used it to their advantage not realizing she was using them to hers. There was no need to call for a mutiny, Niema used their dock time at the various smaller stations to begin building her own set of associates and allies (Contact me to play one!).Some of the allies she made weren't entirely willing. Being a conductor of trouble she knows where to find it and built a small network of "Piked Men" whom she branded.
Some of these men were found in dire situations, she swore to save them in return for their servitude should she ever need their help. Freedom to live their lives until called upon in return for owing her their lives and being there when she calls upon them. Many men made swore and accepted the brand on their forearm there-after but few realized how serious she was about it until just after she crested into her twenties. Niema called a meeting on the ship she was part of and gave the crew a choice; stay as her crew or die. Half of them never made it out of the room and a few others smartly waited until their next dock to disappear. It didn't matter though because Niema called to arms those who would fit the roles on board her new ship. Those who refused, she personally hunted down and killed, mounting their bodies on her ship as a statement.
The Count and Underboss were of course aware of these changes in time but they couldn't possibly have predicted she was coming for them. Nor could they have known she had traded out her dark brown eyes for an augmented set of black ones. It took a lot of practice to get used to triggering the change in her vision which is done with an internal eye-lid that comes from the outter edges inward. It makes her entire eye look black and expands her field of vision and ability to pick up the smallest bits of light-- which can sometimes be used against her if she's not quick enough to close her eyes or change them back. The rest of her crew were outfitted with various night-vision visors and goggles that they had pulled together and they planned the Midway Station Blackout.
Niema grew up on the Underside of Midway and knew where to hit her to cripple her and she did. It was twenty minutes of mayhem for the rest of Midway who were oblivious to the massacre going on in the bottom. She and her men came in black, faces painted and all, armed to the teeth with an array of melee weapons. When the power was cut they swept through and cleaned house. All upper management from Under-Merchants to the Underboss and Count were slaughtered without mercy or hesitation. Nie could have had the Count role herself but it wasn't for her, not engaging enough so she'd made a deal with one of the willing crew members, Alistair Covok; she'd give him the Count position on Midway and she gets to keep her hands dirty.
And so it was done. When the lights came back on those of the Underside did what they always do, filled the void. Aspiring commoners became Under-Merchants and there was a new kind of life that flowed through there. Opportunity was in the air and it made people both greedy and happy. As for what the High-Count of the Underside thought or thinks? Niema doesn't know exactly but she presumes all is well as the years roll by and things go back to business as usual, however unusual Underside business tends to be!
