Played By= Barbra Palvin
Category= Freelancer - Pilot
Name = Thawnolan Sinclair
Alias/Nicknames = One-Seven-Five, Red, Inc-Baby, Thawny, Olan, Twitch, Blaze
Age = Appears 17-20; Consciously 42; technically around 300 (she doesn't remember)
Status = Single, never wed
Height = 5' 3''
Weight = 110 lbs
Eye Color = Light/bright green
Hair Color = Red/orange
General Demeanor/Personality = makes Earth culture references most people don't get; has a hard time making social/intimate connections; usually high energy (an engineered quality that comes with her sleep cycle); usually good natured; a little kooky; she comes off addle-brained to most because she has seen the culture and evolution of humans in two universes and few have context to her perspective; because of her conditioning (pilot training) and general extended periods of times in solitude she can be known to ramble when she feels comfortable engaging someone;
Quirks = Suffers from Cryo-Stunting (see Glossary); Unconsciously thinks outloud; casually uses profanity; has a titanium spine with a pilot-port at the nape of her neck; has trouble remembering names; isn't very good with time outside of individual jobs and estimated travel windows; has abnormally large lungs and bladder; often speaks AM lingo instead of common English; has a 72 hour/12 hour sleep cycle, meaning she's alert 72 hours and sleeps a solid/dead 12 hours (only negotiable with the aid of extreme stimulants); prone to prolonged physical twitching if she spends too much consecutive time jack-piloting (8+ straight hours);
Best Skills = Avionics/Piloting (qualified to fly all classes of ship); Astral physics (most calculations in her head); Operational engineering (figuring out how things work, specifically foreign ships she's never flown before); Astronomical navigation (most calculations in her head); Jack-Piloting (see Glossary below); Linguistics (namely when they pertain to astrological charts and navigational controls); remembering coordinates;
* piloting of any kind refers to her ability to maneuver and read external input such as behavior and maneuverability of other ships; assessing their capabilities etc.
General Skills = Ping-pong; Guitar; Drums/drumming (sometimes it's with her fingers in the air!); Geometric puzzles; running; climbing/crawling (like through the duct system of a ship); pretending to be clueless; making people laugh; compartmentalizing the frustrations of cryo-stunting; yoga; meditation; jump-rope;
Reputation = According to most reputable sources she's the best supply runner in the At-verse... and most of them are also sure she's crazy and delusional otherwise. Olan is also known for her original L'jet ship complete with a pilot-port system which gives her unparalleled control (that the AtVersians know of!). Most of the jobs she takes are ones no one wants or will do, and typically include long hauls, like a direct jump from Javos to Hailos or Zavaki which can take up to a week depending on speed; which changes depending on load. Widely accepted in the pilot community as a prodigy and assumed to be as young as she looks.
Soz... what'yer saying is.. you want'ta know where-I-come-from and shit so you can figure for yourself if I'm as hazzuks as they say, right? It's green, I understand. You 'member though, just cuz it sounds like I'm talking tongues to you, don't meant what I'm tell'n aint true. If you hope to understand who I am you gotta hear about the Back Times and before The World Asunder.
-Yes, that's what I'm tell'n... I was born on Earth before it went to hell and fuck'n blew up. Well, born isn't even the right word for it. I was designed, cultivated and grown in an incubation chamber; they called us Inc-babies. The corporation who did it was Aviation Masterpiece, you might'a-never-heard of 'em. They made me for flying and trained me same as the rest in the program. I was born to R&D,.. you know, Research and Development? Anyway, to the mopes and flat-scans we were for luxury flying and the safety of the fuck'n Maga-Whales... you know them rich-cats ain't had a'care about luxury back then, not with Earth about to have it's last shake. It was a cover story for the fact we were perprare'n for the Exodus...They dressed us up and pranced us around, had us fly'n these boring ass routes around our planet which already had that goin'away look about it. I was their poster child literally and in the lab and trials. Though I didn't actually get to fly my first ship until I was fourteen, just a little S-class at first. When I was fifteen or so I graduated to become a pilot and got my name.
-What do you mean what do I mean got, my name? AM had a policy, only graduates got names, until then you were called by your designation or part of it anyway. I didn't say that? Hm..I was One-Five-Nine before they named me Thawnolan, I go by Olan now though. See, we all had sponsors and the sponsors who helped fund the research to train and make us got to name us when we were ready to pilot on our own. There were people who knew the world was ganna go cuz'a what we did to it, soz they threw everything they had at it. which included the likes of us. I excelled and was bumped up to be the back-up pilot for the first trip out here to the At-verse. Trip was almost fifty years back then, slip-space travel that long was still experimental.
When we got back Earth was some ninety cycles older and everyone whe knew was mostly dead, the next generation of thinkers there to try and make some sense and hope of things. I came back not but sixteen maybe seventeen years old consiously-- I actually got to fly us back cuz the pilot died from some allergic reaction to a Javos plant or someshit, how fucked is that huh? Soz back to how it went down... Somewhere before and around when I was eighteen we did training of the next-gen pilots on short ten-year flights out and back. We got to test new ships and the new Inc-babies.. though if you ask me my generation was way better. The rest after us just came out like droids I think. All commandable reflex and no think'n of their own.. but what're you ganna do? I trained 'em what I knew and told AM what we found when we came back. Things like the truth about not everyone making it out of slip-space.
See, a ship moving through time and space that way is a delicate thing. Someone does something wrong and she wobbles just a hair, you're counting souls. It was on my second round of training recruits that one'of'em got electrocuted through the controls, crashed their ship and mine before we got completely into atmoe. Had the ships been full crew we'd've lost more but only a few died either side. I was almost one. That's where I got my titanium spine from and the pilot-port upgrade. I heard-tell someone wanted me to pilot this Expedition of yours so you can re-engineer this tech.. I think I'm done being someone's experiment, so you can box those thoughts if that's the case though we may have to compromise if you're going to upgrade this expedition ship for Jack-piloting.. speaking of.. what kind of ship is it? Did it get built yet?
-Sorry you're right I was telling you about me. So I get into Jack-piloting and I'm even better at that than I am manual and I'm still young enough to blindly jump into anything they put me in front of. Next thing I know it's 2642 AD, beforeThe World Asunder, I'm the pilot for the Flag ship of the Exodus for the At-verse and I've already got almost two centuries of flight time under my belt. And when you're fly'n more than five years you have to have someone come out of cryo every so often to check the nav-charts and make sure there's nothing ahead you got to worry about. The second wave didn't leave until ten years after that, 2652 AD on account'a the fact that they didn't have enough ships built capable of return for the last two waves. See, the first two were mostly builders, researchers, security and engineers and the like... getting Javos ready for the next few waves of colonists where more ships were sent.
I was running a supply ship most of the time so I made the trip in forty years give or take complete there and back. Smaller supply ships were made to try and bring medical, ship building, mining and manufacturing tech from Earth to the At-verse. So I was there to head the Third wave too in 2683 AD there abouts. I got the tattoo on my back just before we launched, it helps hide the scar from my spine replacement. It's also the only ink on my body that's not a visual map of the tech inside me that allows me to jack into a ship -- well, my designation and the AM logo are inked on my left thigh below a hub-map.
Back to the Four Waves... the last one didn't leave until after I came back from the third Wave. Apparently there was a whole lot of rioting and who could blame them? Millions got left behind to die with the planet... I'm not sure how the last wave of ships were filled but I think that's where we got the sorts who run the Underside.
- What was that? ... oh, yeah pretty good. Not all the ships go the same speed so yeah, some first wave ships came out the same time as the faster second wave ships. And in the third wave there were ships ten years lagged behind the rest same as every other trip. And those that didn't make it through slip-space, assumed smashed to shit in the black. The Fourth-wave got fucked some how, I think it was bad slip-drives because some ships didn't pop out until half a century later. A few of them popped out short of the destination and we had to jump out and give them a tow the rest of the way. My ship wasn't as bad off as the rest but it was the first Pop-class vessel I'd flown so I think I'm allowed a learning curve.
I think you probably know the rest of my story, I've been jumping cargo between the colonies for anyone who'll hire me. Wel... maybe not anyone...
So.. do I have the the job? You got Numbers for this expedition or just going to sail into the black and hope for the best?

Glossary

Aviation Masterpiece (AM) = it's a company that no longer exists because their founders and the bulk of their management never came out of slip-space during the last wave. They were pioneers in space travel beyond the known Milky Way and were perfectionists with the "Pilot-Port" technology. They were most known for discovering the At-verse and organizing the Exodus to it before The World Asunder.
AM lingo = to most in the At-verse it's jibberish but to anyone who's studied the backtimes, particularly what's known of their space programs like Aviation Masterpiece (AM) they would know that AM created a lingo for their Pilots specific to their uses. For a Glossary of AM lingo terms click here (soon!)
Cryo-stunting = A rarely known condition effecting the pilots who flew 3+ voyages between Earth and At-verse before the World Asunder. These pilots may outwardly look as young as 17 but technically be over a thousand years old do to repeated centuries of distorted time through slip-space. Their bodies inwardly age like most people and will suffer from aching bones and joints as they get consciously older. Outwardly the process for aging appears much slower, this is caused by the stunting in the muscle and skin aging. This may mean that gaining muscle mass beyond their form the first two trips or so, may be difficult.
Inc-Baby = refers to an Incubation-Chamber baby, one who was cultivated in said chamber through artifitial means where they were "grown." Aviation Masterpiece coined the phrase and were very public about using these genetically manufactured babies specifically for piloting; using the slogan "Engineering the best Pilots"
Jack-Piloting (noun; Jack-Pilot)= a pilot (from Earth) who specializes in flying ships by plugging into their systems through a port in the back of the pilots neck. Aviation Masterpiece (extinct company) were the ones to perfect this technology and used it in several of the supply ships that traveled between Earth and Javos in the century and a half (earth time) before The World Asunder.
Pilot-Port (Pi-Port, Fly-Jack) = refers to Last-Gen Earth Tech specific to a pilot program created and run by Aviation Masterpiece, a company that no longer exists. The pilot-port comes with internal interfaces in various places of the body where the tech is connected to the pilot's nervous system. This allows a pilot-- with practice, to operate ship functions with their mind/body like an extension of themselves.
The Exodus = the event of leaving Earth in four waves; 1st - Left Earth 2642 AD, arrived AtVerse 2642-2652AD; 2nd - Left Earth 2652 AD, arrived AtVerse 2672-2682 AD; 3rd - left Earth 2683 AD, arrived AtVerse 2703-2713 AD; 4th - left Earth 2725 AD, arrived AtVerse 2745-2755 AD, 03-95 WA.
