OOC Alias/Name: Vid Magnuson Age: 32 SN for this character: To Damage Morale Email (if different): todamagemorale@aol.com / vidmagnuson@aol.com Tell us a random/odd fact about yourself. I once shot a man in Reno just to watch him die. While trying to come up with a name for a character that had a vague allusion to my own personal knowledge and experience, I hit a random name generator and it gave me Vidarr Magnusson. Feeling this was a little on the nose, I hit it again and it gave me Magnus Vidarrson.Tell us about one of your favorite RP moments. While in a space set campaign, there was a situation where the character I was playing was using a fake name, and the ship received a message from an old contact requesting help. Not wanting to give away his false identity, he waited a few days until he could get off ship and send a fake message to the ship's dead captain from her brother, asking what she was doing on that world. The message went on to say it wasn't safe there, but that he would be waiting for her on another planet where he knew they would both be safe-- the planet where the old contact lived --and that she should head there as soon as she was able.
He set the message to release on a delay so that it wouldn't be received until after they had left the planet where the message was sent from, and when the crew received it, they took a vote on whether or not they should go to meet the brother and tell him what happened to the sister. My character told them that it sounded like a trap, and that they shouldn't go, but they otherwise voted unanimously to go to the planet. It wasn't until much, much later near the end of the campaign that the other players found out that he had orchestrated the whole trip in the first place to see his contact.Describe your thoughts of this SL in five words. New take on proven groundsWould you prefer a writing prompt (for the char you're applying for) from SL Members and/or questions? I'll say yes, but to be honest I'm not sure how you mean writing prompt here, so questions are also acceptable.Did anyone recruit you? What were they like? Yes, they were sneaky and deceitful incredibly nice. I've played with them before.Recruiter SN: Bound but free
IC Info Played By: Michael FassbenderCategory: UndersiderName: Anton KresnikovAlias/Nicknames: "the Specialist"Age: 38Status: Believed WidowerHeight: 6'2"Weight: 194lbsEye Color: BlueHair Color: Auburn to BlackGeneral Demeanor/Personality: Typically quiet unless someone has been foolish, or something needs to be said, Kresnikov prefers to observe more than contribute to a conversation taking place. This usually leaves him on his own by choice in social situations. It is difficult to get a rise out of him, but when he is angered it is even more of a challenge to calm him down again.++ Quirks ++- Desensitized: From the violence he witnessed as a child on through to the violence he has performed himself, violence does not shock him, and he seems to have no empathy for those being hurt.
- Prosthetic Forearms: Due to the combination of scars from his fights and the torture later ( See Bio ) Anton has no sense of touch in his arms.
++ Best Skills ++- Cruelty, Brutality, Agony, Pain & Fear: The trade of the Specialist. Five aspects of devastation that he employs before and during the kill.
- Endurance, Survival: The torture he has endured has taught him how to withstand harsh pains and push through them regardless of the cause or environment.
- CQC, Short Blades: Kresnikov learned to fight at an early age, both hand to hand and with knives or other blades. He uses a deadly blend of martial arts with no formal style, making his attacks unpredictable and often debilitating if not lethal.
- Improvised Combat, Improvised Weaponry: The Specialist is never without a weapon. Walls, pipes, the ground, even the target's own limbs can all be used in a fight if you do not care to appear barbaric. He does not.
- Study: The Specialist does not undertake a single task without learning everything he can about it. Sometimes this requires additional time to complete what he is after, but the end result cannot be argued with.
- Perception, Intuition, Conjecture: Anton pays attention to the world around him, and minor details do not go without notice. Further, as he sees these details, he is able to recognize importance and causational links between pieces of information quickly, allowing him to draw what are often shockingly accurate conclusions with what could be considered little information.
- Grudges: He is not a man to be crossed. He may bide his time to attain his vindication, but it will come, and it will be unpleasant.
++ General Skills ++- Firearms: Capable in many forms of combat, the Specialist is also an able hand with many forms of firearms, but they are too impersonal for his tastes.
- Tracking: As a part of his Study, he will often learn the behavioral patterns of his targets and find a way to track them down. Others may be faster at it, but his patience brings him to his quarry in time.
- Explosives: As with firearms, the Specialist has learned the craft of terror and will frequently employ explosives with a high level of skill. While he is able to manipulate them to his needs, they are hardly his focus for anything more than distraction or shock.
- Linguistics: Growing up in a settlement that had a strong oral tradition, Anton picked up an ear for languages at a young age. He practices them in his spare time as a hobby to keep them fresh in his mind, and with some time picks up others despite his age. Languages from the World Asundered are among his favorite to practice.
Reputation: A master in the tradecraft of gruesome and shocking death. Eating at the resolve of those he faces, he is a weapon of morale devastation. While some play bridge to pass time, the Specialist cripples the spirit of others. There have not been many witnesses to both the Specialist's and the Harbinger's cruelty, but those who have that can retain a shred of sanity and are still able to speak say that there are striking similarities.Brief Bio: As a boy, his early years were not overly kind. The settlement where he had been born was constantly under siege by raiders or worse, but he found himself able to survive by remaining out of sight of others all while able to watch them take their toll on those who had not been so fortunate. But a boy can only witness the cruelty of men so many times before he becomes desensitized to it. With every raid he hid away and watched, but soon watching turned to study, and by sheer exposure he learned the trade of cruelty, the effectiveness of brutality, the usefulness of agony, the efficiency of pain, and the power of fear. When he had learned all he could from the study of those that would take their toll on the ravaged settlement, he decided to take his leave on the first ship that would come through.
People who talk about the Specialist now tell rumors about the boy that was and how he left the small settlement. Some say it was the JSS that found him turning Raiders into corpses, others say that Harbingers thought him one of their own when he turned his own village into a slaughterhouse. Only he knows the truth, but he does not speak of it. When he came to Midway, he had no prospects and knew only one trade. Fortunately opportunity was readily available in the wager-pits of Underside. He had no name to give that he could identify with any longer, but the pits needed one they could provide for betting, and so he gave one that he remembered hearing about as a child from someone who remembered the World Asundered.
In the story of the Strakhznakov, the man made traps of his enemies, leaving wounded to be rescued by their allies only to then be dropped themselves. A ruthless killer who would maim his targets. Anton Kresnikov. In the pits he was no different. He left traps, offered himself up in minor ways to turn the attack around on his opponent with brutal efficiency. In the end the fights left him scarred, and in some cases the injuries were too severe to simply heal, and permanent repairs became necessary. His success afforded him enough to see to the repairs, and the mechanical limbs that had been fitted to him were crude at first, but over time he was able to find other methods of payment and other forms of work.
Anton studied his opponents and his targets, learning everything he could in what time he had in order to find how to hurt them the most. In the wager-pits it had earned him the nickname of the Specialist. An expert in his field, it wasn't long at all before he was approached for a more active application of his services. Certainly not wishing to be a gladiator for spectators all his life, Anton agreed to the call. For a few years he worked for one of the Under-Merchants as a messenger of debt, taking payment in the form of blood and flesh. He built a life there and despite his trade managed to attract the attentions of the Under-Merchant's daughter. Rumor has it that the union was given as payment or appeasement to keep Kresnikov in check, believing that he would never be so brash as to lash out at the father of his wife.
To him the target was unimportant, and when his employer realized that Anton could easily be turned for a better paycheck, it was decided that the man was too big a threat to let live without conditioning. The more work he did, the more they began to fear him, and soon the allegiance he had built as a trusted blade had been soured by his apathetic view of the life of his targets. Growing wary of his capabilities, and certain that it was only a matter of time before he turned on them despite his ties, Anton was locked away in the hopes his spirit would be broken. Carved on, scarred, and tortured for months, he was left in lock up while surgeons made frequent augmentations to his body and all without any sense of anesthesia. The shock nearly killed him several times, but they always left him just on the brink. After a series of particularly vicious surgeries, he was left for near dead just as the Midway Station Blackout began.
Sudden darkness masked his rage, and armed with only a scalpel and bone saw, the Specialist left the facility where he was held a gruesome canvas of corpses. On his way to freedom, he could hear the slaughter coming his direction. Painted with the gore of his victims, and in the process of eviscerating a particularly disliked surgeon in horrible ways, a momentary stand off with Niema's Piked-Men was resolved by informing her that she had no enemies left in the building, and neither did he. When the lights returned, he returned to what had been his home and found it abandoned for the months he was locked away. There was no sign of the Merchant's daughter to be found.
In the years that followed the Blackout, the Specialist continued to work for those that were willing to hire him, but the rumor of what he had done to his captives spread and had earned him a reputation as a man not to be crossed or considered lightly. During the time between his Study Sessions, he would work to refine his life, pouring resources into resolving the tortured scars and mangled flesh of his body. The augmentations that the now dead surgeons had installed were archaic but functional to his needs, and some minor cosmetic adjustments left him looking well enough to rejoin society without being a gruesome specter of a man. Living in plain view of the others kept his works hidden from all but those that needed him, and offered him a wider range of work.
Underside may have been filled with violence and crime, but there was jealousy and blood to be had everywhere in the AtVerse, and those who had witnessed the results knew that the Specialist was more than fit to spill it.++ Glossary Terms ++- Strakhznakov: A term used by the village of his upbringing from the World Asundered. It translates as "Dreadmarks", and refers to a group of brutal military killers.
- Study Sessions: The term used by those familiar with Kresnikov's work to describe the targets of his contract killings, e.g. "I heard that the Specialist has a Study Session with the Vory. Those poor bastards."

xDDD First off, thank you for applying. I hadn't even known you were looking until the you IM'd me a few days ago. Well, I knew you and Tu were speaking because she asked me if I remembered your SN.. but anyway, on to your application.
Shot a man in Reno -- lmao
- Great PB choice!
- I remember you playing that character in the Extinction SL with the mutant zombies :-p Odd tale well worth sharing, though I think I'd be a little creeped out lmao
- Your fav RP moment tags you a plotter which means in theory, we'll get a long splendidly; perhaps come up with some plots/events together
- I LOVE that you went for a bad-guy, the one on the red/dark end of the moral compass. lol
- Just to be clear, his hands and wrists are his but the forearm connecting up to his elbow is machine more or less?
- Is it shielded for EMP type interference or electrical surges?
- You put "Endurance" as a skill of his but your description implies it's specific to enduring through pain... is this accurate? I usually think of endurance more broadly... run longer, fight longer, be patient longer, regardless of circumstance or situation. I just want to make sure you're not unintentionally limiting that notion.
- Loved the last 5 of his "best skills"
- There was a part of the history where you mention some of the things people believe about him... I think those would go best/well under "Reputation" so players can play off if it like rumored whispers (without having to read his bio)
- Considering the "Raider Territory" notion implied in his history of his home, where he came from.. I was wondering if you had an idea where exactly that might be?
- During the Midway Blackout, I assume the doctors he killed were on the Underside?
As for your uncertainty for the writing prompt maybe we should change it to RP prompt lol. That's what we mean, if you were willing to have us come up with a scenario for you to post this character off of so we can see a bit of his personality in play and so you can test-drive him.
That's all for now, I'll re-visit. Thanks for reading and presumably answering! lol

[li][/li] From just about above the elbow down. Keeping live flesh on the other side of mechanical is something that I can't wrap my head around even with the wonderful world of Science! backing it. For obvious reasons it is difficult to find pictures of people with these that work to the level of realistic images that most storylines, but I do have some images available that can help show what he has going on. It's also safe to say that in public he'll wear flesh toned gloves to hide the nature of them.[li][/li] This is something that I figured would be a great thing to work out via play. The models he has currently are fairly simplistic, which leaves him with a few inherant weaknesses. When I've designed the Specialist in his prime, his arms have quite a few benefits, but I figured leaving them mostly stripped for the time being would be a good way to develop through the storyline.[li][/li] Good catch! Yes, I meant it in a more broad sense including things like you mentioned; running longer, fighting longer, regardless of circumstance or situation. I specifically mentioned pain as well because in my experience that's the part that some people don't think about. He isn't just able to run a marathon, he's going to be able to endure torture too.[li][/li] I agree. It just happened that those portions made for good segues in his bio and I didn't want it to look too repetative.[li][/li] I would say that a good place for it could be planet 6 on your map. I had more or less left it intentionally vague to help build on the idea that people don't really have concrete evidence of what happened to the place where he came from. Perhaps it gets discovered later, sort of like Miranda in Serenity.
In my head I imagined that where ever he had grown up would have been a colony of 4th Wave people that were really just looking to be left alone. Unfortunately being left alone also means you don't get a lot of protection.[li][/li] Yes, specifically surgeons with some sense of sadism that would work for an Under-Merchant to either help extract information and payment, or patch up their own men when needed. Less so respectable doctors that lived on the High-Side though it's certainly possible that one of them may have been working both sides of the Station. I'm open to those sorts of angles, much like whatever happened to his wife.[li][/li] That's not a bad idea, plus if it comes to that you'll also be able to get a sample of play style from your applicants.[/ul]

Damnit! I was going to make a guy with a prosthetic/bio-mechanical arm. Your guy has two! Lol
Anyways, nice job with the application. I can see you thought your char out a lot and he seems... dark. Perhaps this SL needs a bit more of that. I'll probably come back and give it a second or third pass, but just wanted to say I enjoyed reading it.

I never knew that about the SN! How about them apples?! Thank you for sharing that random fact, I enjoyed it. Elaborate, and I like that the other players didn't know either. Sometimes it's fun to be surprised as a player. Good share. This might be my favorite reply yet! Well played, mon ami, well played. Rem handled the writing prompt confusion and I went ahead and changed the wording for future applications in hopes of preventing future confusion! Sorries! You weren't the only one, pattern recognized and progress made! Thank you for being apart of it. I'm probably going to ruin this, but I admit I don't get the strike-through (which I presume is a jest/joke)...? As for the app, thanks for submitting it and being apart of our application process. I can't say I'm a fan of a lot of his skills (in a personal way, because it scares me and makes me feel sick) but he seems well rounded. I (of course) still have a couple of questions/comments (cause Remmy already handled some) and your prompt reply had them ready for my second pass-over when I'm more awake. So, here goes: 1) Flesh tone gloves... will they be obvious gloves or to the average eye look like he is normal? (similarly, those with enhanced senses like hearing or smell, would they be able to hear the goings on inside the arms or smell the oils to keep it moving if it's only a glove between them? Or being a simple model/bate necessities, would the average person notice? -asking how YOU imagine it-) 2) (about the quote below) Do you have interest in developing the 6th planet? Could be small colonies on it, or stations orbiting around it and you don't have to make the whole thing but it does make sense and if he is from around there I would be curious what it was like in general since I play a Saborian who is likely to have traveled there as well at one (or many) point(s) or another. 3) You suggested more than once that the wife might be dead or MIA, is that because he doesn't know and you're leaving it open? (it seems like that's what you're saying but I just want to be sure) Also, to clarify, was his Wife around before he was taken under for torture and simply gone when he got out or was he gone before that? 4) Being another lonewolf (and a bad-guy killer at that) do you anticipate most of your RP being business related? i.e. does he need a job to interact with someone? 5) Speaking of his job, how does one hire him? Does he have a number, a go-through, do you just whisper wanting him for a kill and he finds you? ("you" being the hypothetical character wanting to hire him). 6) Now that you know what a writing prompt is... do you want one?! That's it for now, though I don't promise it will be all. lol Overall great application I love to hate. Hate, only because I'm a soft soul that's pouty and frowning at the murdering sociopath who doesn't seem to give a shit. Thanks again for applying!

[li][/li] I imagine they'll be enough for someone who isn't paying a great deal of attention to assume they're his actual hands, but the mechanics underneath can't perfectly mimic a human hand ( at least not yet ). Someone with enhanced senses would definitely be able to pick up on the sounds and smells for the same reasons. Lack of resources to really handle scent masking just yet. If he's Studying though, it's unlikely that he'll be wearing flesh-toned gloves.[li][/li] I'm always willing to help develop a world or society, it's very much a hobby of mine. The stations idea is a good way to explain how it was easy to hide from Raiders, and also why they were easy to attack in the first place. I'll start working up some details.[li][/li] Yes, very much leaving it open. I learned a long time ago that defining all of those doors leaves you with a one sided character and makes it difficult to let other players build attachments. She was around prior to his being taken, and doesn't know if she was involved in his lockup.[li][/li] Not at all. A good portion of what he has tried to do is re-integrate himself into society in some way, and that's definitely something that I want to build on as time goes on. In the beginning I would say a lot of his interraction may be work related, and in fact I've already discussed the introduction of the character with another player that may require the services of the Specialist in order to resolve the loss of another player.[li][/li] This is actually one of my favorite questions. Lots of people like the idea of hired killers but not many of them consider that going about requesting their services is not only scary in some cases, but often illegal and therefore difficult. In the case of the Specialist, he uses a drop box system. Finding out about it would be the sort of work of rumors, but once you've requested his services he finds you, not the other way around.[li][/li] Absolutely.[/ul]

I have a few simple clairifying questions.
Undersider is not technically a character catagory, so do you think he is more of a Freelancer or an Outlaw? The difference is that an Outlaw is known for their illegal (Underside) activities or services, particularly with the JSS and a Freelancer usually is not. The Freelancer, as I understand it, may work with the Underside but does not do so publically or hold a rapsheet for their services.
Second and last question, how might he interact with people who do not deal with the Underside or go there?
Well written application thus far. I will return later to vote, though I am leaning yes already.

[li][/li] Anton spends a great deal of his resources on improving his appearance so that he will be able to move through the society of High-Side without being obviously out of place. He doesn't necessarily seek out social gatherings, but he does what he can to hide in plain sight. For now most of his interaction will be business based, and while most of his requests come from Underside, not all of his Study Sessions will be there which could put him in a great many locations at various times. The act itself is what is intended to draw attention, not the person. When he has to work as the Specialist, he doesn't announce himself as a brutal murderer. The reputation is important, not recognition.[/ul]

While trying to come up with a name for a character that had a vague allusion to my own personal knowledge and experience, I hit a random name generator and it gave me Vidarr Magnusson. Feeling this was a little on the nose, I hit it again and it gave me Magnus Vidarrson. If anyone knows the Rapper " Childish Gambino " aka Actor/Cpmedian Donald Glover who I love to death, got his Rapper name via Wu-Tang Name Generator. So I like it for that reason.

[li][/li] [/ul] There is no such thing as a fair fight in the world. Someone will always have the upper hand, someone will always have the advantage and in a five way fight the upper hand changes quickly. One man had been blindsided by the tank of a man, and the question of whether the downed fighter would ever speak again was a valid one. Anton had studied the man as he brutally pummelled the first victim into the ground, leaving him bloodied and silent. The other two victims were pushed from his mind, their sessions were ended with broken bone and dislocated joints, leaving them howling in pain and unable to continue, let alone console their own injuries.
The tank of the man stumbled forward like an angry and tired bear, his breathing was labored from the broken rib that Anton had gifted him with a fiercely planted elbow just to the left of his solar plexus. The crack of the bone was audible to both of the men, even over the chanting from the crowd... "Dran! Dran! Dran! Dran!" The blow was useful, but it did not come without sacrifice. As Dran had pulled away, a knee had been slammed into Anton's side, leaving his breath equally labored, but opened up the opportunity for two sharp blows to the face, leaving his lip split and an eye swollen.
There. That was his advantage. The large man was strong, but slow, and did not think on his feet. The disorientation he was suffering from quick blows left him with a major blindside, and he wouldn't be thinking clearly enough about his footwork to change his position to defend against a precise blow. While the mental process ran through Anton's head, Dran had gone to wrap his arms around the Specialist in a sweeping lock of limbs but his brutal dispatch of one of the downed fighters had come in handly. A head of hair mussed with blood from a backwards smash to a nose left his neck and shoulders slicked with visceral paint, and he was able to drop from the grip like a greased pig. Darting swiftly to the right and into that blinded eye, he was able to round Dran's body just at the edge of his vision and enough to get him spinning. It was a brutal setup. He knew how Dran fought now, heavy blows and grappling. Anton was prepared as the convict's muscular arms came around in a haymaker, and he dropped to his back, bracing his weight with both arms before both legs shot forward to catch his knee. It was turned at an uncompromising angle, and the mule-like force sent it back on itself with a loud snap.
Dran screamed. He had been hit several times, and hard, but all of his weight was on his forward leg, and now it was collapsing on the broken joint. Two hundred and ten pounds of man came crashing forward as the Specialist rolled his body to the side and brought his leg up and around Dran's falling neck, aiding the drop with added force. Dran's screaming stopped instantly, his face smashed into the floor with a bloodied gurgle as his body went limp. The chanting quieted quickly, and pushing up to his feet with slow breath, he stared down at the large fighter. With a slow torque of his neck, he turned for the gate from which he entered, content with the canvas of blood and pain he left behind.
